Catherine Whall Smith shares . . . A little bit of Chaplin Town & Church history

I hope you will be able to join me on Saturday, June 13th, 2015 – 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. to celebrate Connecticut’s Open House Day. Check out my blog post on this event https://catherinewhallsmith.com/blog-2/.

The following and some additional information about where I have lived for over 40 years, can also be found on the Town of Chaplin’s website http://www.chaplinct.org . – “An extraordinary early 19th century building boom and a 20th century road improvement created Chaplin, a village suspended in time.  In the late 1700’s, residents of what is now Chaplin had no town of their own.  Their lands were divided among Mansfield, Hampton, and Windham.  To attend church, they had to travel a considerable distance over bad roads.  Benjamin Chaplin, a wealthy deacon of the Mansfield church, who built his home in Chaplin on the Natchaug River was among those who regularly made this long and uncomfortable trip to attend his duties.  Before Chaplin died in 1795, he bequeathed three hundred pounds ($1,500) to form an ecclesiastical society charged with building a new meeting house on the condition that this church be built within a mile and a quarter of his homestead.  This Chaplin church was built between 1812 and 1815 on Chaplin hill, a knoll along the highway a half mile from Chaplin’s home.  Then between 1820 and 1850, approximately 25 homes, a tavern, a general store, a dry goods store and a merchant’s store were built along a curved portion of the major north-south route that parallels the Natchaug

IMG_0037River.  This Winter 2014-15 picture on the right shows the church which sits directly across the street from our home.  Chaplin Street, as it is now called creates a unique study in time in northeastern Connecticut. In July 1974, Chaplin Village was designated a Historic District to preserve the character of the buildings and their settings.  So – SAVE THE DATE – Saturday, June 13th and enjoy our State!!!!

Catherine Whall Smith . . . returns home and to a reality check after the NBMAA show today

Reality check – it’s time to get busy hand quilting the first of a new series for 2015 “Sticks and Stones”.  The opening of the 45th Annual Nor’easter at the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) was today – and the museum was packed – even Governor Malloy was sighted there.  Sharon Butler (Artist and Author of the Art Blog Two Coats of Paint) was the juror for this show.  I found her statement on selecting pieces for this show informative.  Here is part of her statement; ” my main criteria for selecting art for “NorEaster” were that the artwork indicate an artist’s dedication to his or her practice, and that it manifest coherence and direction.  . . . I looked for fresh attitudes that reveal the larger social, political and cultural climate, and pieces that connected aesthetically or conceptually with what I considered the best art being produced today.  . . . ”  So, if you need a destination check out the NBMAA, in New Britain, Connecticut – a museum that is open 7 days a week!  Show ends January 25th, 2015.

Catherine Whall Smith . . . asks the question – Can it really be one week before Christmas?

Peace - Let's join togetherPeace Be with You !

So ONE WEEK before Christmas 2014 and the “Bathroom Remodel” is almost done – just a few minor things like installing the toilet, sink, and fittings. The whole process has been a learning experience – similar to how I create my quilts.  THE PROCESS IS ALWAYS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE – each piece informs the next.  And, I am happy to report that Carol Eaton was excited to get started on my request to create a piece of fabric that has the feel and look of old wood.  She painted, stamped, stained and used dye pencil to create the desired results. I will be using this fabric in some new works – inspired by the old lath that was exposed  when we gutted the bathroom. Her blog post tells it all “Channeling Old Wood!” http://carolreatondesigns.blogspot.com/2014/12/channeling-old-wood.html.      And, to answer the question “Fresh” or “Frozen” – the “Fresh” cooked turkey was the winner.  So Thanksgiving 2015 will be easy – buy the freshest turkey – but now I wonder – Local or Imported?? I think I have plenty of time to think that one through – but like this Christmas – it just sneaks up on you.  Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful Holiday filled with blessings and good cheer!

Catherine Whall Smith wishes you a “Happy Thanksgiving” and wonders again (Fresh or Frozen) will it be enough!

My past Thanksgiving Day posts on the following dates  November 22, 2013 November 23, 2010   November 23, 2011  November 21, 2012 all dealt with the size of my art, and the size and number of turkeys that I would prepare for our Thanksgiving meal.  But this year I started to think first about “Fresh or Frozen”FRESH_14lbs.

FROZEN_7lbsand my mind wondered to thoughts of “Hand-dyed” or “Commercial fabrics”. I use both in my Fiber Art.  So this Thanksgiving 2014 I decided to cook a FROZEN 7 lb. and a FRESH 14 lb. turkey to be “sure there would be enough”.

When working in my studio I also follow that idea of making “sure I have enough” fabric – so my stash is quite large. Over the past two years I have been using more and more hand dyed fabrics created by one of my colleagues and Studio Art Quilts Associates of CT member Carol Eaton. She creates one-of-a-kind fabrics for artists, quilters and collectors. Each piece is made using only the highest quality fabric and incorporates unique techniques to produce their distinctive look. Each individual art cloth in the collection is signed by the artist. Check her out carolreatondesigns.blogspot.com/ and on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/CarolREatonDesigns .

BATH LATHE

OUR HOME IS ALSO GOING THROUGH a bathroom demo/remodel – and I fell in love with this image that I photographed of the old lathe that could be seen once the wall tile was removed. I decided to commission Carol to come up with this look in a piece of her fabric for one of my future quilts. Our email dialogue has begun regarding the look that I am trying to achieve. This collaboration should prove interesting and I will post the outcome on a future blog post . . . to be continued. So will you “have enough”???? Happy Thanksgiving to you!!

Catherine Whall Smith . . . gives a two thumbs up to the MAC’s Opening

Last night, The Mystic Art Center hosted a wonderful evening of art to showcase their 58th Regional Show.  This show, juried by Power Boothe was made up of pieces that had a wide-range of voices, and at the same time explored and enhanced the rich diversity of contemporary art.  For the first time a piece of photography was selected as the 1st Prize winner. This Archival Digital Photograph titled La Cocina is by Karin Forde Whittemore.  As part of her prize she has been awarded a solo show during the 2015 regional show.

I was honored to received the Alice Clark Hubbard Prize for my piece “Tying Up the Hay #1.  Here is the piece hung at the show.  MAC2014  I submitted the following information when asked about this piece.  “The quilts I create are strongly influenced by my surroundings.  My Hay Series is based on my photos of rolled hay.  When they are enlarged they present an image of chaotic lines.  I use those chaotic lines to explore the visual spaced created when line meets line or lines overlap lines.”

So I invite you to check out this show which has something for everyone. Show dates: August 1st – September 20th, 2014  at the Mystic Art Center 9 Water Street, Mystic, CT 06355  (860) 536-7601  www.mysticarts.org

Catherine Whall Smith wonders . . . what did you do on this beautiful June 1st day!

So, I assume that most of you spent this beautiful June 1st day outdoors. Since I was invited to participate in the Mansfield Historical Society’s Museum Opening of “Antique and Vintage Quilts”, I was inside for the afternoon surrounded by fine workmanship,  beautiful fabrics and a stunning display of antique quilts, like this one shown below;

I brought some of my 2014 work – and explained my improvisational process to the visitor’s to this exhibit. Here is a picture of where I was located in the exhibit; and one of my pieces pinned to a panel like the ones that I use in my studio.

The piece on the panel is part of my “Balancing Acts” series -it’s title “Storms Coming”

Another view – note the beautiful piece on the left – it creates a stunning visual when hung on the wall.

MHS_8PointStar1800'sAnd here (on the right) is a perfectly executed 8 point star quilt.  This quilt was made by Mary Forman Paxton (1817-1903) and it is exquisitely quilted.  Because it incorporates a simple repetition of 72 blue stars set in rows vertical and horizontal – it had a very calming orderly affect on me.

Meeting quilt enthusiasts is always a pleasure and since I hand quilt all of my fiber art it was interesting to hear their comments – “this must take you an awful long time”  For me, the process of hand stitching is so meditative that time passes very quickly when I am in “my stitching zone”.  It makes me think “Love what you do and do what you love”.  Hope you all were able to do just that today!!  The Mansfield Historical Society Museum is open every Saturday and Sunday, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. through the end of September. http://www.mansfield-history.org  And if you are interested in seeing another Quilt Exhibit in the Storrs area – please visit the Windham Textile and History Museum in Willimantic – to view “Inspiration Quilts: Then and Now” running through September 7th.  The WTHM is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
