Catherine Whall Smith shares good news

You still have time to visit the Artist’s Cooperative Gallery of Westerly – 7 Canal Street, Westerly Rhode Island (401-596-2221) to view the art in their 21st Regional Show which was juried by Roberta Richman.  Because I was at the Studio Art Quilt Associates Conference in Alexandria, Virginia I was not able to attend the opening – but upon my return I received  some good news in the mail.  My piece “Rolled Hay” had won the Mabel Kingsbury Fentress Prize for Crafts. The letter that accompanied the award and prize check stated that my piece “is outstanding”!  www.westerlyarts.com

Right now my plan is to pick up this piece at the end of the Westerly show and display it along with some of my recent work at the Mansfield (CT) Historical Society Museum Opening Exhibit of Antique and Vintage Quilts on Sunday, June 1, 2014 – 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.  http://www.mansfieldct-history.org  (I was invited to display my art quilts and I will also have an opportunity to discuss my designs and improvisational techniques with visitors.) Hope to see you there!!

Catherine Whall Smith. . . thinks sometimes it is hard to visualize the “real” size of art

Did you ever look at a piece of art photographed in a book and then when you actually saw it’s real size wondered why it was so much bigger or smaller than you had imaged?  Since many of us have a frame of reference that quilts are bed size it may be hard to imagine that many present day Art Quilts can have a much smaller or larger real size.  Many of my line pieces start out small and then “grow” as I start to assemble them.  The movement of the curved lines across the surface of the quilt encourages me to create more and more of this movement.  In Gold Hay #6 the piece grew to a finished size of 60Hx60W inches.  Shown below it is hard to tell it’s real size;

 Hung on a wall you have a better idea of it’s real size;

this close up photo shows the hand stitching of one section

So what do you think is the real size of this piece?

Catherine Whall Smith is thinking “Green”

Catherine is thinking “green” and “what you see is what you get”.  My quilts reflect my surroundings is a phrase that I use often due to the fact that my photo images of  local scenes are used in my art.  Like these images that are in one of my 2014 pieces titled “Balancing Acts”.

But more importantly I have to think that the color in the fabrics that I use in my hand-stitched art are influenced by what I “see” around me .

Shown above, this view of our hillside is reflected in my work – shown below.

So what do you see and are you ready to see a green “Spring”? I think I am.

Catherine Whall Smith wishes you a “Happy Thanksgiving” and wonders does size matter!

My past Thanksgiving Day posts on the following dates  November 23, 2010   November 23, 2011  November 21, 2012 all dealt the size of my art, and the size and number of turkeys that I would prepare for our Thanksgiving meal.  But this year I started to think first about where all the food would go when it was ready to be  served.  Thankfully,  I came across thisTABLE FOR DESSERTS long narrow table in a shop in Chester, Connecticut that was big enough to fit our fireplace opening perfectly!   Right now it holds a beautiful flowering cactus plant – but soon it will have an assortment of cooked vegetables, and other goodies for our Thanksgiving Dinner.  The best part is that it was already painted my favorite color – ORANGE.   So what will you be using to serve your delicious Thanksgiving Dinner this year?
