Catherine Whall Smith . . . asks when does your art (or that Thanksgiving Turkey) become “larger than life”

Thursday morning I was up early to drive to Old Saybrook, CT to take the train into New York City for the day.  My purpose was to attend the new members induction ceremony of the National Association of Women Artists, Inc. (1889-2015).  The purpose of N.A.W.A. is to foster public awareness of, and interest in, visual art created by women in the United States.  While encouraging contemporary and emerging artists, the Association honors and continues the long and important contribution of women to the history of American culture and art.   The morning event took place at the Rubin Museum of Art.  The large auditorium was packed and I watched and listened to the new inductees accept their certificates while two of their pieces of art were shown “Larger than Life” on a huge (I’m guessing 20 feet) square screen.  See below for a section of that screen – you get the idea!   Their stories were touching, inspiring, and beautiful, as was their art. NAWA_LOGO

When my pieces were shown I was so struck by the impact of making something “larger than life”. This size did matter.

Rita Hannafin (left) was able to join me at the NAWA gallery. Over the past three years I have been the Connecticut Co Rep for Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) and have seen many of my colleagues meet the challenge of entering art shows that we may not have ever thought about entering several years ago. Besides being stitched our works of art are painted, dyed, manipulated, and loved from the beginning process until the completion.   So, as I ask myself each year at this time regarding my Thanksgiving Turkey – “Fresh, Frozen, One, or Two – will the Turkey be BIG enough?”  If I have any doubts this year – I can always project it’s image on a larger than life screen and know that it will at least satisfy everyone’s visual senses.  Wishing all of you a Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends.   Peace be with you!

Catherine Whall Smith . . . says “Thank-You” to Mabel Kingsbury Fentress!!

Last night was the opening of the Mystic Art Center’s – 59th Regional Show (August 7th – September 19th). My piece “In the Hay Field/Day” received  the Mabel Kingsbury Fentress Award.   IMG_3116As usual the event was packed. Attendees also had an opportunity to view the solo show of last year’s regional first prize winner Karen Forde Whittemore.  Her solo show CUBA! CUBA! includes photographs from her visits to Cuba over the past several years. A quote from her show catalog ” What may seem at first glance lifeless, does not accurately portray the Cuban people.  I invite you to explore the images and contemplate what might appear depraved and foreign, yet is universally relevant to our own existence.  Beneath the surface, lies the beauty within.”

So it’s another beautiful summer day, maybe this is the time for your drive to the the Mystic Art Center, to enjoy all of the art that MAC has to offer. Located at 9 Water Street Mystic, Connecticut 06355 phone: (860) 536-7601 http://www.mysticarts.org

Catherine Whall Smith enjoyed CT Open House Day 2015

One event done – now time to move onto the next.  Participating in CT OPEN HOUSE DAY 2015 helped me to clean-up, organize, and reflect on some of my art.  When the work is in progress sometimes each step becomes so automatic that I’m not always sure how I was able to think through and complete each step.  Selecting the color palette, determining the size of the components, and completing all the lines of hand-stitching are  now intuitive.   Talking about the pieces that I hung for the open house gave me an opportunity to see that I really did have definite ideas in mind as my colors, lines, and stitching were assembled into a finished piece.  There seemed to be interest in two of my newest pieces “Hay…Leave Me Alone” #1, #2 (shown below).

%22Hay…LeaveMeAlone%22#1#2

These 24 x 24 inch pieces have been stitched at the top of each piece to stretched canvas that I covered with beautiful linen. Because they are only attached at the top of the canvas you are still able to feel it’s drape and examine the back side of each quilted piece.  “Hay…Leave Me Alone #1” was just juried into the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts 104th Annual Exhibition. This annual exhibition includes a large talented group of artists of all mediums representing Connecticut and surrounding states. Mystic Art Center, 9 Water Street Mystic, CT.  Show Dates: Friday, June 19th – Saturday, August 1, 2015.  Opening Reception: Thursday, July 2nd from 6 to 8 p.m.  Hope you can make it to this show at the The Mystic Art Center, another one of Connecticut’s great destinations.

Catherine Whall Smith . . . welcomes YOU and Marge and Gould into her home.

So just for fun, I decided to dress up my two mannequins “Marge” and “Gould” to welcome visitors to my home to celebrate Connecticut Open House Day 2015 this Saturday, June 13th. My mother-in-law Margery Smith was an expert seamstress, who created this dress sheIMG_2692 is wearing along with a matching vest that Gould (my father-in-law) has on under his “Kiss an Artist today” apron.  The two of them wore these outfits to holiday parties. IMG_2702I assume that Marge used her Singer Slant sewing machine to whip them up.  In fact I still use that same sewing machine in my studio to create my fiber art. It sews beautifully.  Well hope you can stop by 44 Chaplin Street, Chaplin CT from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Marge, Gould, and I will be waiting!!!

Catherine Whall Smith . . . shares some photos of the Atwood Farm

Yesterday, I decided to check out one of my favorite spots to take photos of rolled hay packed in white plastic.  A quick 6 minute drive from my home @ 44 Chaplin Street brought me to the Atwood Farm located @ 624 Wormwood Hill Road.  This 19th century home is now the headquarters for Joshua Trust – Conservation  and Historic Trust, Inc.  It will also be open for CT Open House Day 2015 and will have a few of my quilts on display.  IMG_2688Here is one of the photos that I will copy digitally onto treated cotton  and will use for a new piece of my fiber art.  IMG_2631 It hasn’t spoken to me yet – though words like “Teeter-totter” come to mind.  There are many lovely outbuildings on the property. One that will also be open for their Open House Day is the Weaver’s Cottage.  Here is a photo of it’s door with a charming sign; and a view of the entire building.  I’ve heard a local Chaplin weaver, Peggy Church will be doing a demonstration 0n that day.  So if you make it out to the “Quiet Corner” for CT Open House Day on June 13th, 2015, stop by my home/studio in Chaplin and the Joshua Trust’s Atwood Farm located in Storrs, CT.

Catherine Whall Smith . . . shares a story about the Gurley Tavern or better known as “The Quilt Shop” in Chaplin

When we moved into our home over 40 years ago – our neighbor at the time was a local legend – Ruth Snow Bowen, one of the foremost quilt makers in Connecticut.  Her home was known as The Quilt Shop. IMG_2607One of her favorite quilt patterns was the “Grandmother’s Flower Garden”. I am privileged to own the very last quilt that she completed in that pattern, and will have it on display in my home for CT OPEN HOUSE 2015.  “Her home called the Gurley Tavern, c. 1822 was built as a stagecoach inn the year Chaplin was incorporated. In the photo to the right you can see the molded pilasters with decorated capitals that frame the entryway.   The Chaplin Post Office was located in the downstairs north parlor from 1950 to 1965.”  (Historic Homes of Chaplin Village by Johanna Philbrick).  Here is a better view of one of the lovely and inviting side entrances;

            IMG_2605

So, in the tradition of having a Quilt Maker in Chaplin the “Quilt Shop” logo seems to have moved to my home @ 44 Chaplin Street.  Where I, like Ruth design and hand stitch original art work.

Catherine Whall Smith . . . here is one destination for you on June 13th, 2015 for the statewide CT OPEN HOUSE DAY

IMG_2580Our home is located to the south of the Old Store on Chaplin Street, and “was built sometime between 1828, when Isaac Goodell bought an acre and 17 rods from Luther Ripley for $125 and 1835, when Isaac sold the same land “with  dwelling house and merchant store and shed” to his brother, Walter Goodell, for $2500.  Our house is one of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture on Chaplin Street and is a good example of the transition from Federal to Greek architectural style in New England villages.  The sidelights and oval attic window are typical of the Federal Style, while the free-standing fluted Doric columns, which support a portico, are typical of Greek Revival architecture.” (Historic Homes of Chaplin Village by Johanne Philbrick, pg. 11)  At the end of the Chaplin village is the local cemetery, which has many wonderful gravestones that remind us of our history.  Here is one of those stones ready for Memorial Day 2015.
