Catherine Whall Smith . . . gives a two thumbs up to the MAC’s Opening

Last night, The Mystic Art Center hosted a wonderful evening of art to showcase their 58th Regional Show.  This show, juried by Power Boothe was made up of pieces that had a wide-range of voices, and at the same time explored and enhanced the rich diversity of contemporary art.  For the first time a piece of photography was selected as the 1st Prize winner. This Archival Digital Photograph titled La Cocina is by Karin Forde Whittemore.  As part of her prize she has been awarded a solo show during the 2015 regional show.

I was honored to received the Alice Clark Hubbard Prize for my piece “Tying Up the Hay #1.  Here is the piece hung at the show.  MAC2014  I submitted the following information when asked about this piece.  “The quilts I create are strongly influenced by my surroundings.  My Hay Series is based on my photos of rolled hay.  When they are enlarged they present an image of chaotic lines.  I use those chaotic lines to explore the visual spaced created when line meets line or lines overlap lines.”

So I invite you to check out this show which has something for everyone. Show dates: August 1st – September 20th, 2014  at the Mystic Art Center 9 Water Street, Mystic, CT 06355  (860) 536-7601  www.mysticarts.org
