Catherine Whall Smith wishes you a “Happy Thanksgiving” and wonders (again) does size matter!

Two years ago I posted  https://catherinewhallsmith.com/2010/11/23/is-it-big-enough/ – I contemplated if my 22 pound turkey would be “big enough”.     My goal at that time was one of producing larger sized hand-quilted fiber art.  A year later  (https://catherinewhallsmith.com/2011/11/23/catherine-smith-wishes-you-a-happy-thanksgiving-and-wonders-does-size-matter/) I reflected on the fact that I had explored a larger format with triptych’s and diptych’s – and I had decided to cook two 14 pound turkeys that would certainly be  “big enough” .

“Gold Hay #6” 2012 CWSmith (60H x 60W inches)

In 2012, my pieces have become larger.  The picture above shows “Gold Hay #6” hung behind the pan that is my favorite way to cook a turkey.  This roasting pan was given to me by my mother-in-law Marge many, many years ago when I suggested that I might “do Thanksgiving” that year.  I immediately became the owner of “the Turkey Roaster” and continued to “do Thanksgiving” from that day forward.  The turkey this year is a 16.9 pound Free Range Barrel Brined, No antibiotics ever, fed all vegetable diet, no growth hormones, complete traceability to farm TURKEY!

It fits the roaster – so it will be “Big Enough”.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING – may everything be “big enough”!

Catherine Whall Smith will be sharing her thoughts on what inspires and drives her art

Events coming up include my speaking at the Bristol Quilt Guild meeting this week.  In 1993  ”Pain” (59H x 53W inches) shown below was  juried into “Materials: Hard & Soft”
at the Greater Denton Arts Council,  in Denton, Texas.  It is one of the pieces that will be included in my talk.  Looking forward to sharing my thoughts on what inspires and drives my art with the Bristol Quilt Guild members.

Catherine Whall Smith is thinking . . . time to take down the “Line Dances” show

“Line Dances” at the University of Connecticut will end this Friday, October 19th. I’ll be removing the pieces at the Thomas Dodd Research Center and Homer Babbidge Library Gallery on the Plaza at the end of the week.  So if you haven’t had a chance to see the show head over to the UConn campus this week.  A few weeks ago I added my “Self Portrait” pieces to the show at the Dodd Center.  The basic shapes in these two quilts were taken from pattern pieces that were drafted to fit me in a Graduate course (CTID 303)  that I completed during the Fall Semester of 1974 at the University of Connecticut.

2012 “Self Portrait” CWSmith All Rights Reserved

The two pieces put together measure 66H x 105W inches. My signature design lines separate each shape; as well as lots of slashing lines.  The question, if I were to make a garment today from these pattern shapes would it fit . . . hmmm do I really want to know that!!!

Catherine Whall Smith – adds “Orange Peels” to the Line Dances exhibit at UConn

“Orange Peels” – CWSmith.All RightsReserved

Because I had to remove “Views – Country/City” from one of the Homer Babbidge Library showcases to deliver it to it’s new owner – I decided to fill the space with an an earlier piece that incorporates my lines.  The picture on the left shows this piece in the show case and below is a picture of the piece in progress.

“Orange Peels” in progress

At the time I was working on this piece, I placed a picture of Edouard Vuillard’s painting Large Interior with Six Figures in front to study.  I am continually inspired by his paintings that incorporate pattern on patterns, saturated colors, and emerging figures from walls and doorways.   So who and  what inspires you???

Catherine Whall Smith sends a thank-you to WTHM

Thank- you to the Windham Textile & History Museum  for hosting my talk yesterday and for their support in displaying my pieces in the show “Line Dances 2”. Developing my “talk” about my art quilts and my process in creating them was an excellent exercise and one that I plan to continue.  The photo on the left, taken by Bruce Raymond shows three pieces that I included in my talk;  “Tribute to Truitt”; “The Kiss”; and “Yellow #2”.  In the background you can see some of the textile museum’s displays.  Another picture taken by Raymond is this interesting view shown below – if you look carefully you can see the hour glass that I use in my studio to keep me focused on working hours at a time without really knowing the exact time of day.

Which reminds me- I think it is time to get back to my studio – what do you think?

Catherine Whall Smith warns that those “marshmallows” are everywhere

So during a day long scenic drive there they were – the “marshmallow” faces waiting by the side of the road.

“WaitingByTheSideOfTheRoad”_2012

MarshmallowSays"Hi"_Pennsylvania2012

MarshmallowSays”Hi”_2012

Hard to believe that someone had taken the time to give each one their own identity.  Some happy, some grumpy, some just staring out into space.  One even said “Hi”.  Eventually this experience may be interpreted and end up in one of my pieces – but right now  I’ll just enjoy what I saw and what I think is a form of “installation art” – what do you think?

Catherine Whall Smith is thankful to all of you who attended the opening of the 3 shows at UConn

Sunday’s opening was certainly a busy time.  Lots of people, lots of talking, and lots of sales.  I am very thankful to the many people that supported me in this endeavor.  Of course my family, friends, and neighbors – but specifically Jane Recchio at UConn; Michele Palmer, and Rita Hannafin who were always there to assist in hanging the show and to offer their encouragement.  Right now I am watching the 2012 Olympics and looking forward to days in my studio and the time to hand quilt a top that I just finished.  It’s #6 in the “Gold Hay” series, a large piece 60H x 60W (inches) with my lines and lots of movement across the surface of the quilt.  So what are you looking forward to, and are you watching the Olympics?

For more information on the three shows, go to http://lib.uconn.edu/about/exhibits/
