Catherine Whall Smith – Quilts for Art: Mini Quilt Raffle – “Pearls in the Sunlight” (18H x 14W inches)

2011 - "Pearls in the Sunlight" (18H x 14W inches) Q=A=Q auction

Quilts for Art: Mini-Quilt Raffle – October 29, 2011 – January 8, 2012 – Here is your chance to win a small quilt donated by one of the exhibiting quilters in “Quilts=Art=Quilts 2011”.  Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Purchase your tickets by phone (315) 255-1553 or at the Art Center. Drawing will be held on  January 8th. You do not need to be present to win – winners will be notified by telephone. Proceeds benefit the Art Center’s ongoing exhibitions & programs, including Quilts=Art=Quilts, Quilting by the Lake & QBL2.

For this worthy cause, I decided to do a simple composition using a similar palette as the diptych in the show, but added some of my photo images of those “marshmallows” – or hay covered  in white plastic.  I usually do not alter the color of the image – but prefer to print it out duplicating the sunlight on the subject  – which on that day was a wonderful glowing lavender – blue.  The piece is hand-quilted in straight lines across it’s surface.  – – – With permission, I’m hoping to take some photos of the other “Mini Quilts” and post them on my blog when I return from the Opening this week-end.

Catherine Smith – “Gold Hay #1, #2” at Quilts=Art=Quilts

The opening of the 31st Annual Juried Quilt Exhibit “Quilts=Art=Quilts” will be held on Sunday, October 30th, 2011 at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, New York.  One of my diptych’s – “Gold Hay #1, Gold Hay #2 was accepted into this show.  I plan to attend the opening and have the opportunity to view all of the quilts in person.

"Gold Hay #1, Gold Hay #2 - 2011 (28H x 56W inches)

My Artist Statement on these pieces;   “Presently the quilts that I create are strongly influenced by my rural surroundings.  My photos of rolled hay, when viewed enlarged present a visual image of chaotic lines.  The “Gold Hay” series enables me to use those chaotic lines to explore the spaces that are created when line meets line or lines overlap lines.  .  .  . ”

Catherine Smith – news from Martha Sielman, Executive Director SAQA – SAQA Trunk Show – This is a Quilt!

Today, I received some good news – – my piece “Hay Bale – Blue String” 2011 has been chosen to be part of the permanent collection at the Michigan State University Museum.    ( I was able to view all of the pieces in the traveling show at the SAQA meeting in Denver, Colorado May 2011 and was amazed by the variety and the beautiful execution of each piece.) .  . .   If you are interested in more of the details – here is most of the latest post from SAQA regarding the traveling Trunk Show – This is a Quilt!   . . “During the planning of this show SAQA arranged for 50 pieces to become part of the permanent collection at the Michigan State University Museum. Michael Solomon was responsible for selecting the pieces that will go to the Michigan State University Museum at the close of the traveling trunk show .  Michael Solomon wrote:  When Kris Sazaki first asked me to be the juror for a collection to go to the Michigan State University Museum, I willingly accepted, thinking it would be a piece of cake. After all, I had owned a fine art gallery in Sacramento for over 10 years, and I had certainly chosen art and artists for many gallery exhibits. I faced a slightly greater challenge with group shows as opposed to solo exhibits, but I felt I had a pretty good grasp of the contemporary painting and sculpture we exhibited. I have also juried shows outside of my gallery, as well as my own photography exhibits.

For the SAQA show, I came to realize that my mandate would limit and challenge me when I faced the prospect of selecting just 50 pieces out of 268 submissions. I have spent many hours in art museums around the world, I am an avid collector, and I have formulated some ideas as to what constitutes “great art.” While the quality of art may be subjective, great art is simply that which compels one to look at it, again and again and again. This is the truth, if not a truism. And that’s the reason museums full of art that visitors repeatedly visit, contain great art. I can’t stop looking at and admiring the art on my walls and pedestals; if I do, I end up replacing it with something better, and then repeat the process.

In jurying this show, I looked for aesthetic design, shapes, color, composition, texture, and subject matter. I am somewhat partial to figurative subject matter, so that may have affected my judgment in some respects. All of the work I viewed exhibited high artistic quality, and I found myself initially choosing way more than my allotment of 50. I then faced the agonizing task of deselecting many pieces I appreciated. In any event, I hope you enjoy my selections.”

Catherine Smith’s Purple Series #1 #2 in Art New England – September/October 2011 issue

One of my favorite magazines to read on Contemporary Art and Culture is Art New England.  My copy of the September/October 2011 issue arrived today.  Two of my recent  works in the Purple Line series are shown in their “Artist Directory” .

Purple Line Series - Gold Hay 2011 CWSmith

I decided to use the services of a professional photographer to shoot the art for this magazine and I was thrilled with the true color images that Laurie Simonds of Fresh Life Photography provided for this issue. Though I haven’t read all of the Reviews yet, the one page ad of David Hall Fine Art in Wellesley, Massachusetts put that gallery on my destination list to see the John Grillo Exhibition : The Abstract Expressionist Years – Opening September 17th – through October 15th.  — Read more about John Grillo in Deborah Forman’s article “Moved by Serendipity”.  Art New England  P. Catherine Smith leaves Cazenovia and returns home to Chaplin, CT

One of the first thing I did when I returned was to check on my vegetable garden.  Since retiring from the University of Connecticut in 2008 I’ve worked full time on my quilts, and have spent the last two Summers expanding the size of our garden. – Last year was a fabulous year for tomatoes – I used large ORANGE tomato cages – and continue to use them this year.

Orange Tomato Cages - 2011

As noted they are Orange  – even though I had the option of several other wonderful colors – lime green, yellow, purple, or magenta – I picked the Orange ones.  These round circular towers reminded me of one of my 2009 pieces titled “Autumn Swirls”. This piece continued my exploration of a simple line and the visual space it creates as you move across the quilt.  During that time I used alot of dotted and  patterned fabrics.  Eventually I developed a “comfort zone” with solid colors -due in part to a workshop I participated in taught by Nancy Crow in January of 2010 at the Fuller Craft Musum in Brockton, Mass.

Catherine Smith – leaves Copenhagen returns briefly to Chaplin then on to Cazenovia

"Straw Vote" (36 X 36 inches) CWSmith 2011 All rights reserved

Back to Connecticut and then on to Cazenovia, New York to attend the Opening of the Art Quilt Experience Show.  This juried show that runs until July 31st – displayed 64 quilts from 11 countries in two galleries – my pieces “Grey Hay” and “Straw Vote” were displayed separately – one in each gallery – info on this show – http://www.theart-quiltexperience.com/ .

Leaving the show, the color Orange again caught my eye – outside of the Art Gallery at Reisman Hall on the Cazenovia Collge Campus was this wonderful Orange sculpture.   So my journey continues looking for ORANGE to inform my art.
